The Chinese Music, Dance and Arts Program (CMDAP) encourages students to get to know Chinese culture and develop their interests through learning Chinese music concepts, dances, percussion instrument, and visual arts in painting, drawing, and crafts. Eligible students are from 4 years old to adults. They can be any background including Chinese families, adopted children of Chinese decent and those of any cultural heritage. CMDAP was originally established from a former Performing Arts group in January 2004 by Kentucky Arts Council (KAC) teaching and performing arts artist, and professional musician Hong Shao. The program is designed to provide students with Chinese music, dance, songs, Tai ji fan and sword dances, and music instruments as well as modeling to Chinese costume show. Since 2004, this program has performed at Chinese New Year celebrations with many venues such as the Univ. of Kentucky Singletary Center for the Arts, the Lexington Children's theater, the Lexington Public Library, the Lexington Chinese school, and it also toured many cultural exchange events and festivals across the state, such events and festivals including the Alltech World Equestrian Game and Lexington MayFest.
Since 2010, the program has begun offering Visual Arts classes to the community. The class encourage students exploring and being creative on arts. Chinese brush painting is taught by professional artist and professor Li Dongfeng who is an associate professor of Arts and Design from Morehead State University, and an accomplished award winning professional painter. Dr. Kathy Werking is a juried member of the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea and the Kentucky Craft Marketing program. She owns a Studio and teaches art classes to children and adults. Her class inspires students's creativity in a nurturing and fun environment.
